Sculptra Aesthetic is an FDA-approved injectable dermal filler used to restore volume loss and improve skin quality. As we age, we begin to lose collagen, elastin, and fat in our faces. This natural aging process can cause our face to take on a “hollowed out” appearance and for our skin to become saggy and dull. board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. S. Larry Schlesinger and his team of licensed aestheticians perform Sculptra injections at their Hawaii surgical center in Honolulu to help their patients achieve a plump, youthful appearance without surgery or downtime.
What is Sculptra & how does it work?
Sculptra is made of poly-L-lactic acid, a synthetic material that is biocompatible, meaning that it is naturally absorbed by the body over time. Sculptra is strategically injected into sunken areas and folds deep below the skin’s surface where it stimulates collagen production, gradually plumping the skin and smoothing bothersome lines and wrinkles. Unlike gel-based hyaluronic acid fillers, which create volume by sitting below the skin, Sculptra actually creates a natural scaffolding for your skin’s collagen to build upon, creating results that improve over time.
A 2011 study found that 99% of patients were satisfied with their Sculptra injections
What areas of the face can Sculptra treat?
- Cheeks
- Jowling in the lower face
- Nasolabial folds (between the nose and mouth)
- Marionette lines (between the mouth and chin)
- Chin wrinkles (“orange peel” chin)
How long does Sculptra last?
While the results of most fillers appear within about a week and last 6-12 months, Sculptra results appear gradually (over the course of 4-8 weeks) and last for 2-3 years, on average.

Is Sculptra safe?
Sculptra has a very low incidence of serious adverse reactions and a high satisfaction rate. A 2011 study found that 99% of patients were satisfied with their Sculptra injections, and concluded, “Sculptra Aesthetic is a powerful and predictable volume restoration stimulator that should be added to the continuum of care for the patient seeking correction of volumetric changes.”
About your Sculptra treatment & recovery
How many Sculptra treatments will I need?
Though some patients with mild facial aging can benefit from a single Sculptra treatment, most of our Honolulu patients see their best results with 2-6 Sculptra treatments scheduled 1 to 2 months apart. Because each person is different, you may need to return for touch-up injections to maintain your desired results. Dr. Schlesinger will help you develop a personal Sculptra treatment plan during your personal consultation.
Is there any downtime associated with Sculptra injections?
You should be able to return to your daily activities immediately after your treatment. There might be some slight swelling in your face on the day of each injection of Sculptra you receive, but this should subside within a day or two.
What other areas of the body can Sculptra be used?
Sculptra can also be used to augment the buttocks—a procedure informally referred to as a non-surgical butt lift—providing long-lasting results without the risks of Brazilian butt lift (BBL) surgery. And, since you don’t need to have excess fat to be a good candidate, Sculptra butt lifts are ideal for patients who desire a more shapely buttocks but simply don’t have enough fat.
